The Town of Truro is developing a Community Wildfire Protection Plan (CWPP) to better understand and reduce wildfire risk in and around Truro, particularly as climate conditions change and wildfire seasons become longer and more severe. The CWPP is a long-term, practical roadmap that brings together risk assessment, mitigation actions, emergency preparedness, and public education into a single coordinated approach.
Why a Community Wildfire Protection Plan?
Wildfire risk reduction is not achieved through a single action. It requires a coordinated set of measures that address how vegetation is managed, how communities are built and maintained, how emergency response resources are prepared, and how residents understand and reduce risk on their own properties. Truro’s CWPP is being designed to integrate these elements in a clear and defensible way, aligned with FireSmart principles and provincial guidance.
The plan will help the Town:
- Identify areas at higher risk of wildfire
- Understand how wildfire could affect homes, neighbourhoods, parks, and municipal infrastructure
- Prioritize actions that reduce risk in a cost-effective and achievable way
- Improve community awareness and preparedness
- Strengthen coordination between municipal departments, emergency services, regional partners, and other stakeholders
FireSmart and Homeowner Resources
The Town of Truro’s CWPP is being developed using FireSmart principles, which are Canada’s nationally recognized, evidence‑based approaches to reducing wildfire risk to homes, neighbourhoods, and communities.
FireSmart focuses on practical actions that homeowners and property owners can take to reduce the likelihood of wildfire affecting their homes, particularly from wind‑blown embers, which are a leading cause of structure loss during wildfires.
Residents are encouraged to explore FireSmart Canada, a free, trusted resource that provides step‑by‑step guidance, tools, and checklists for:
- Reducing wildfire risk around homes and buildings
- Understanding the Home Ignition Zone
- Making simple, cost‑effective changes to landscaping, materials, and maintenance
- Improving neighbourhood‑level wildfire resilience

FireSmart Canada – Protect Your Home and Community
FireSmart actions taken by residents today complement the longer‑term planning and mitigation work being developed through Truro’s Community Wildfire Protection Plan.
Community and Stakeholder Involvement
Meaningful engagement is a central part of Truro’s CWPP. Local knowledge, operational experience, and community perspectives are essential to understanding risk and identifying practical solutions.
Engagement will include opportunities for public input and information-sharing throughout the project.
Public Survey – Now Open
A public survey is now open and available to all residents and community members. The survey is an important way to share local knowledge, experiences, and concerns related to wildfire risk in and around Truro. Feedback from the survey will directly help inform the Community Wildfire Protection Plan.
As a thank-you for participating, there is a draw to win $100 Downtown Truro Dollars.
Once you open the survey, you will first see a screen where you can enter your name, email, phone number, and address (optional). If you do not wish to enter the draw or provide this information, you may also choose to skip this step and proceed directly to the questionnaire.
Public information sessions will also be held later in the process to increase awareness of wildfire risk, explain recommended mitigation actions and FireSmart practices, and show how community input has shaped the final plan.
Stay Informed
As the CWPP progresses, updates will be shared on this page, including opportunities for public engagement, draft materials, and information on how residents can take action to reduce wildfire risk in their neighbourhoods.
