2026 Seniors Programming:

2026 - Seniors Active Aging Adventures

Are you a senior who is ready to embark on a journey of movement, joy, and wellbeing? Join our seniors activity classes, where all levels are not only welcome but celebrated! No prior experience needed – just bring your enthusiasm, and we'll provide the rest. Our skilled instructors are here to guide you through a variety of activities designed to boost your strength, flexibility, and overall vitality. Get ready to make new friends and discover the joy of staying active. It's not just a fitness class; it's a celebration of your wellbeing!

You can expect a different class each week! This is ONE sign up, and one small fee, for 5 whole weeks of adventure. 

Location: Douglas Street Recreation Centre
Dates: Thursday mornings, 5 weeks in January: 8th, 15th, 22nd, and 29th, with bonus of February 5th

January 8th 10:00am - 11:00am - Active Aging Fitness Class 

  • Help preserve muscle, build strength, and develop cardiovascular health with Active Aging Fitness class led by Carolyn. This class, guided by a skilled senior fitness class instructor, will incorporate elements of traditional fitness classes… with a fun flare! This is open to all adults and seniors, of all fitness levels. This event takes place at Douglas Street Recreation Centre, an accessible recreation space will accessible parking out front. This session will be held in the Lawn Bowling Club house.

January 15th 10:00am - 11:00am - Chair Yoga

  • Join Micky Rigby, certified yoga instructor and senior herself, as we experience the benefits of yoga with the support of a chair. Perfect for all fitness levels, Chair Yoga is as effective for the participant as Mat Yoga. The chair is used as a support, which can make the practice especially appealing for those with sore knees, dizziness, or trouble getting up and down. Using the chair allows us to get deeper into some of the poses, which can feel really lovely. This event takes place at Douglas St Recreation Centre, in Room E, which is an accessible building with accessible parking close to entrance/ exits.

January 22nd 10:00am - 11:00am - Line Dancing

  • Step into the rhythm of fun with this beginner class of Line Dancing! Enjoy a lively and social atmosphere as our instructor Karla teaches you a variety of dance steps (all genres of music are used) in this fantastic group activity. This event takes place in the Lawn Bowling Clubhouse at Douglas Street Recreation Centre. This venue is accessible with accessible parking in the front of the building

January 29th 10:00am - 11:00am - Qi Gong

  • Immerse yourself in the gentle flowing movements of QiGong, a Chinese exercise system promoting balance and harmony. Enhance your energy flow, reduce stress, and experience a sense of calm as you engage in this ancient practice. Join us from 10:00am - 11:00am in the Lawn Bowling Clubhouse of Douglas Street Recreation Centre. This is an accessible recreation facility with accessible parking near the main entrance.

BONUS WEEK - Thursday February 5th - 5:00-6:00pm - Gidha and Bhangra Dance

  • Gidha and Bhangra (traditional Indian dances) offer significant physical benefits, including improved cardiovascular health, full-body muscle toning, stress relief and enhanced coordination and balance. These energetic folk dances are a fun and effective way to boost overall physical fitness and mental well-being. This event takes place in the Lawn Bowling Clubhouse at Douglas Street Recreation Centre. This venue is accessible with accessible parking in the front of the building.

Class Times: All classes will start at 10:00am, except the bonus week of February 5 (evening session, 5:00-6:00pm).

2026 - Seniors Crafternoons

Calling all seniors! Join us for a four classes of fun-filled afternoons of crafting for all skill levels, where instructors will guide you through our project. Whether you're a seasoned pro or a crafting newbie, there's a seat at the table just for you! Expect laughter and surprises; it's an adventure waiting to happen! This program will be held in partnership with the Boys and Girls Club of Truro and Colchester on set weeks. Come and experience the joys of intergenerational programming. Intergenerational programming provides an opportunity to connect children and older adults as they come together to share, learn and engage with each other. 

You can expect to complete multiple types of crafting which may include card making, wood working, canvas painting and more! As we partner with Boys and Girls club, participants can expect some light and gentle movement as we share and celebrate the finished crafts together. There will be a different session each week. This program has ONE sign up, one small fee, for four weeks of adventure.

  • Timber Whimsy - wood crafts
  • Add a touch of whimsy to any space with a hand crafted wood design /home decor - cheerfully made in Harmony, Nova Scotia, and painted by you! Winter- theme wooden craft to be determined!
 
January 13th starting at 2:30pm until 4pm
  • Susy Shearer, - resin & sea glass art
  • Join us as Seaglass Designs By Suzy takes us on a sea glass journey with resin art. Every piece of glass has been picked by she and her sisters. Each picture is never exactly the same because no two pieces of glass are the same. Suzy regularly leads DIY classes for those looking to craft with resin and other mediums.
 
January 20th starting at 2:30pm until 4pm
  • Cheryl Cook, Card making
  • Elevate your heartfelt messages with our Handmade Card Crafting Class! Dive into the world of creativity as you learn to design and create four unique cards. Our expert instructor Cheryl will guide you through various techniques, from intricate paper cutting to stylish embellishments, ensuring each card is a work of art. Whether you're a novice or a crafting enthusiast, our classes provide a fun and inspiring environment to express your sentiments with a personal touch. Join us for a hands-on experience that turns ordinary cards into extraordinary expressions of love and care.
 
January 27th starting at 2:30pm until 4:30pm
  • Gerry Hale, wood carving
  • As part of our Crafternoon series, Instructor Gerry Hale will help you discover the art of woodworking! Unleash your creativity as you learn to carve and shape wood with precision. Whether you're a beginner or seasoned enthusiast, our instructors will guide you in crafting a beautiful piece. Join us for a hands-on experience where passion meets craftsmanship, and leave with both newfound skills and a unique, handcrafted creation. Enroll now for a journey into the world of woodworking!

Class Times: All classes will start at 2:30, but weekly class length will vary based on the activity.

Sportball Multi-Sport

Sportball Sports Instruction For Kids

Our Multi-Sport programs provide children with a skills-driven, high-energy, and fun-filled curriculum. Multi-Sport introduces children to the fundamental concepts and skills behind eight popular sports: soccer, hockey, basketball, baseball, volleyball, tennis, golf & football. Using creative instruction and positive encouragement, the program focuses on the development of gross motor skills, balance, strength, coordination, stamina, and timing. Equipment is age-appropriate and sized for the children in the programs.

Adult Badminton

Date: Wednesdays 7:30-9:00pm - NOTE - NO SESSIONS DEC 24TH, 31ST
Location: Truro Middle School

This 1/2 gym, drop-in adult badminton program is supervised by Town of Truro staff and allows for unstructured scrimmage play for those 17 and older.

Notes: 
- Drop-in program, no pre-registration required.
- Please enter through gym doors.
- Bring a water bottle.
- We do have some equipment on hand, but players can bring their own.
- Please bring indoor shoes.



Adult Basketball

Date: Wednesdays 7:30 -9:00pm - NOTE- NO SESSIONS DEC 24TH, 31ST
Location: Truro Middle School

This drop-in adult basketball program is supervised by Town of Truro staff and allows for unstructured 1/2-court scrimmage play for those 17 years of age and older.

Pickleball

Drop-in pickleball programs that allow for unstructured scrimmage play.

Caregivers & Tots Open Gym

Date: Tuesdays & Thursdays - NOTE - NO SESSIONS DEC 25, JAN 1ST
Times: 9:00-11:00am
Location: Douglas Street Recreation Centre  

Playtime was created especially for families! Preschool-aged children and their guardians are invited to explore various sports (equipment provided) and other toys. It’s a great way to stimulate mental and physical growth.

- Drop-in program, no pre-registration required.
- There are no staff at this program, parents must stay with children.
- Bring a water bottle.
- Please bring indoor shoes.

 

 

Family Baby Walks - Facilitated by Maggie's Place

Date: Thursdays (November 6th - March 19th, 2026) NOTE - NO SESSIONS DEC 18TH, 25TH, JAN 1ST
