The Truro Fire Service is located in the George Jones Memorial Fire Station, at 165 Victoria Street.
In 1860, George Jones, a Black barber and respected community builder, brought people together in his Queen Street barbershop to form Truro’s first “Bucket Company.” His leadership and vision laid the foundation for the modern fire department and showed the power of collective action.
The station was renamed in 2025 as one way to honour his contributions and acknowledge the deep and ongoing presence of African Nova Scotian communities in Truro’s history.
The Town of Truro Fire Service consists of highly dedicated and trained career and volunteer fire personnel, responding to a variety of calls for service such as firefighting, motor vehicle accidents, water rescue, and medical emergencies. The Department has an active fire prevention and inspection division covering fire investigations, public education, school programs, fire inspections, public awareness, and ongoing training within the fire industry. The Department strives to provide the greatest level of service to you - the citizen, and the community in preventing fires, protecting property, and assisting the public on any matters that arise.
