The Town of Truro administers the Taxi Bylaw within the Town. This Bylaw covers both Taxi's and Transportation Network Companies, operating within the Town of Truro. Click here for a copy of the Bylaw: Town of Truro Bylaws

How to apply for a Taxi Driver’s License:

  • You must provide a current letter of employment from an established taxi business operating in the Town of Truro, stating that you have obtained employment as a taxi driver (subject to obtaining a Taxi Driver's Licence from the Town of Truro).
  • You must complete the Taxi Driver Application Form and provide a copy of your valid Class 1 through 4 Nova Scotia Driver’s License. The application form can be found online here:  pdf Taxi Driver Application Form (88 KB) . A copy can also be obtained at Truro Town Hall. A fee of $50.00 is also payable at the time of the application.
  • You must apply for a Criminal Records/Vulnerable Sector Check. This ensures that the applicant has no disqualifying convictions that would prevent them from obtaining a license. The Criminal Records Check application form can be obtained online here: Criminal Record Check. A copy can also be obtained at Truro Town Hall. There is a fee of $30.00. This package is to be completed at the Truro Police Service. 

Once the Criminal Records/Vulnerable Sector Check is approved and all information has been submitted and reviewed, the Taxi Administrator will issue you a Town of Truro Taxi Driver’s License subject to meeting the Town of Truro Taxi Bylaw requirements.

How to apply for a Taxi Owner's License:

To apply for a Taxi Owner's License, you must meet the requirements of the Town of Truro Taxi Bylaw# B1031200. An appointment can be arranged for your "Vehicle for Hire Inspection" by contacting the Taxi Administrator at 902-895-1148. 

To obtain a Taxi Owner's License, please complete the following application form and provide the following documents:

  • Taxi Owner Application Form, linked here:  pdf Taxi Owner Application Form (60 KB)
  • A clear photocopy of your Insurance Certificate
  • A letter from your insurance provider stating that your vehicle is insured for public liability, property damage, and passenger hazard in an amount not less than $1 million
  • Copy of Motor Vehicle Registration Permit. The original document must be in the vehicle at the time of inspection.
  • Copy of Motor Vehicle Inspection. This inspection is to be completed within 90 days of submitting your application. 
  • Meter Calibration Slip. Must be dated, signed and current within 30 days of submitting your application.
  • Taxi Owner License Fee of $30.00

How to apply for a Transportation Network Company (TNC) License:

What is a TNC?

TNC stands for Transportation Network Company. These companies provide prearranged transportation services for compensation within the Town using any software, application, telecommunications platform or digital network to connect passengers with TNC Drivers.

How do I apply to become a licensed TNC in the Town of Truro?

The following documents must be submitted to the Town of Truro for approval prior to operating a TNC within the Town of Truro:

  • Transportation Network Application Form, linked here:  pdf TNC Application Form (329 KB)
  • Proof that the corporation is legally entitled to conduct business in Nova Scotia. If the applicant is a corporation, please include letters of incorporation or other incorporating documents duly certified by the proper government official or department of the Province of Nova Scotia or of the Government of Canada.
  • Proof of insurance. Obtain and maintain an SPF No. 9 – Transportation Network for Nova Scotia Automobile Policy.
  • Pay the annual licensing fee. The fee is based on the number of vehicles approved to operate on the TNC platform:
    TNC License – Annual Fee
    1-10 Vehicles $500.00
    11-25 Vehicles $1,500.00
    26-100 Vehicles $5,000.00
    More than 100 Vehicles $10,000.00
