No.2 Construction Batallion
No. 2 Construction Battalion
The Town of Truro is proud to honour the legacy of the No. 2 Construction Battalion, a unit of profound historical significance to both our province and the nation.
A National Apology and a Historic Pledge
On July 9, 2022, a National Apology was delivered to the descendants of the No. 2 Construction Battalion by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Defence Minister Anita Anand at the TAAC Grounds. During this event, Mayor Bill Mills announced Truro Town Council’s pledge to rename the TAAC Grounds in honour of the Battalion. This decision, made in June 2022, reflects the Town’s commitment to preserving and celebrating the Battalion’s legacy.
Significance of the Site
The site holds deep historical value as the former training and drilling site for the No. 2 Construction Battalion, which was headquartered in Truro, N.S., after its initial establishment in Pictou, N.S. Recognizing this site’s importance, the Town of Truro is undertaking efforts to ensure the Battalion’s contributions are appropriately commemorated.
Commemoration
On November 8, 2025, the site was officially renamed the No. 2 Construction Battalion Athletic Facility, marking a significant milestone in recognizing the legacy of Canada's first and only all-Black battalion to serve during the First World War. The renaming coincided with the completion of the revitalized grounds, creating a renewed community space that both honours the past and serves future generations. As part of the commemoration, an onsite monument was unveiled to recognize the Truro-Colchester members of the No. 2 Construction Battalion, accompanied by educational panels highlighting the history and contributions of both the No. 2 Construction Battalion and the Truro Amateur Athletic Club. Together, these features create a lasting tribute that celebrates the community's rich history while providing opportunities for education and reflection.
A Community-Led Initiative
This initiative was led by the Town of Truro's African Nova Scotian Committee Strategy Committee.
