We are excited to announce that thanks to the Local Infrastructure Fund through Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, a greenhouse donated by Dalhousie University will be erected in Stan "Chook" Maxwell Park. This funding, announced by Kody Blois, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food and Member of Parliament for Kings–Hants, will enhance the community garden and extend the growing season for local residents.

This initiative is especially significant for Truro’s African Nova Scotian community, promoting cultural heritage while improving access to locally grown, nutritious, and culturally appropriate food. The greenhouse will serve as a vital resource for the community garden located in The Island, the historical Black community in Town. This garden, which holds 20 garden boxes, has faced challenges over the years, including limited access and a lack of resources. With the addition of the greenhouse, funded by Imhotep Legacy Academy's Culture of Growing program through Dalhousie University, the garden's capacity and sustainability will be significantly enhanced.

Through a partnership with the provincial Department of Agriculture, the project also supports a Black Youth student program, which provides hands-on agricultural training and fosters community connections. Black Youth students involved in the program assist garden box owners while learning best practices in personal gardening through specialized learning sessions led by the Department. This collaboration not only provides essential support but also strengthens the garden's role in increasing food security within the local African Nova Scotian community.

Food grown in the garden primarily supports the community itself. Garden box owners will use the space to grow produce for their households, with the assistance of Black Youth students. With these supports and future funding opportunities like LFIF, the goal is to develop a sustainable plan that increases food security through community-led agricultural practices while fostering cultural connection and community well-being.

Together, we are creating positive change and building a stronger, more vibrant community for everyone.
