Heritage Conservation Districts are designated under the Provincial Heritage Property Act as a means of identifying groups of buildings and their surroundings for specific conservation measures. Truro's collection of architectural styles is a physical testament to the history of Truro, its people, and the events which formed the basis of our present-day community. The heritage buildings, both stately and modest, which line the Towns streets, contribute immeasurably to the character of Truro's streetscapes. The Town recognizes that if this valuable resource is not protected through a heritage conservation strategy, it may be lost to future development.

Truro’s Community Plan is an integrated plan which includes the Community Sustainability Plan, the Municipal Planning Strategy, and the Land Use Bylaw. Truro’s Community Sustainability Plan deals with community values and priorities. Truro’s Municipal Planning Strategy and Land Use By-law have more specific content, primarily relating to property development, and are governed in scope by the Nova Scotia Municipal Government Act.
The Town’s Municipal Planning Strategy (MPS) is the principal policy document for Council, providing guidance for decisions on land use and development matters within the Town of Truro. It also serves as a reference manual for citizens, particularly those engaged in residential or commercial development, but also for anyone wanting a more thorough understanding of the policies of Municipal government.
The Municipal Planning Strategy (MPS) is enabled under the Nova Scotia Municipal Government Act and provides direction on all other planning documents that are, or maybe, developed and amended subject to this plan.
Truro Town Council approved the new Community Plan in November, 2023. For more information on this process, see Strategic Initiatives: Truro Let's Connect Community Plan Process.
