...The Town of Truro is taking proactive steps to safeguard Victoria Park’s hemlock trees from the threat of the invasive Hemlock Woolly Adelgid (HWA). Though HWA has not yet been detected in the park, experts believe its arrival is imminent, and early intervention is critical.
To protect the health of Victoria Park’s forest ecosystem, the Town is implementing a strategy that includes:
Increased monitoring and surveys
A chemical treatment program to protect at-risk trees
Plans to introduce biological controls as a long-term management solution

Eastern hemlocks are vital to Nova Scotia’s old-growth forests. They provide shade, stabilize soil, and support biodiversity. In Victoria Park alone, approximately 12,000 hemlocks form ten distinct stands below Lepper Brook Dam, playing a crucial role in maintaining the park’s natural balance and beauty.
HWA is a small, aphid-like insect that feeds on the sap of hemlock trees. Over time, this feeding weakens the trees, leading to their decline and eventual death. First discovered in Nova Scotia in 2017, HWA has now been found in at least seven counties in the southwestern part of the province.
Residents and visitors can help reduce the risk of HWA spreading to Victoria Park:
Avoid infested areas, especially between April and July, when HWA is most active.
Do not move firewood, branches, or outdoor gear between forests.
Wear clean clothing and wash it after visiting potentially infested areas.
Avoid parking near or under hemlock trees.
Place bird feeders away from hemlock trees to help limit spread.
If you believe you have spotted signs of HWA, please contact the Park, Recreation and Culture Department at:

Community Action Fund
What is the Community Action Fund?
The Community Action Fund provides financial support to residents of Truro and Colchester County, helping them participate in experiences that promote physical, social, intellectual, creative, and spiritual well-being. By engaging in recreational activities, individuals can build confidence and self-esteem, improve health and wellness, develop leadership skills, forge friendships, and enjoy the opportunity to be part of a team.
How Can I Contribute to the Fund?
The Community Action Fund relies on the generosity of the community. If you would like to make a donation, please do so through the United Way of Colchester & Cumberland Counties. Donations can be made by calling United Way at 902-895-9313 or emailing
The Why
Recreation and sport activities are essential to fostering stronger, healthier communities. A legacy donation from the late William “Bill” Lake sparked a partnership between the United Way of Colchester, Town of Truro, and Colchester County to provide financial support for individuals of all ages to engage in local recreational activities. This promotes an active lifestyle and encourages community well-being. It is our hope that others will be inspired by Bill Lake’s generosity and contribute to the ongoing strength of our community.
Who Can Apply?
Residents of the Town of Truro and Colchester County who need financial assistance to participate in a recreational activity are eligible to apply, provided they do not qualify for other existing funding programs (such as KidSport, Jump Start, Hockey Canada Foundation Assist Fund, etc.) due to the type of sport/activity or age restrictions.

Nova Scotia Walk Day will take place on Wednesday May 14th 2025.
A FREE event celebrating how walking connects us to our communities and each other. Let's celebrate how walking connects us to our communities and celebrate walkable communities -- like Truro!
Enjoy the many physical, social and mental health benefits of connecting with members of your community in a gentle, friendly walk. You also get to visit Kiwanis Park which is a small but picturesque park located in the west end of Truro ideal for walking and jogging, picnics, photography and watching the ducks. There are multiple benches along this paved path and 2.5 laps around the pond is equal to 1.6km.
Walking is the most underrated form of exercise! Science shows that placing one foot in front of the other leads to some seriously impressive mental and physical benefits. Walking, and especially walking in groups, is the perfect activity for a person’s physical, mental, and social well-being. Connecting with people in your community and moving your body means you are better able to do the things you love.
Stay tuned for info on the 2025 event.
