...As outlined in the Nova Scotia Police Act, every municipality that establishes a municipal police department must have a Board of Police Commissioners. In Truro, this is known as the Truro Police Commission.
The Commission's function is to provide governance on law enforcement, crime prevention, and policy direction for an effective and efficient police department. The Commission does not have jurisdiction over the police service's day-to-day operations, including investigations and personnel matters, except when those relate to the Chief of Police. The Commission serves as a link between citizens and the Truro Police Service, helping to establish goals, objectives, and service delivery that meet the community's needs and values.
The Commission is required to hold a meeting at least every three months; meetings are open to the public, but all matters relating to discipline, personnel conduct, contract negotiations and security of police operations may be conducted in private.
The seven members consist of three members of the Town Council, appointed by a Resolution of Council; three citizens-at-large, also appointed by a Resolution of Council; and one member appointed by the Provincial Minister of Justice. The Chair is chosen from among this group of members, and each member must take an Oath of Office and adhere to a Code of Conduct as prescribed by regulations of the Nova Scotia Police Act.
The Truro Police Service is divided into a variety of unique and separate sections.
The sections are as follows:
The Truro Police Service is a community-based policing service and welcomes community participation in policing. We offer a wide variety of services and programs to our community. Our Community Relations Section offers programs to any interested schools or organizations within the Town of Truro on topics such as drug awareness, Halloween safety, and seniors' safety. Some of the community programs and information available are:

Truro Connect is a free public notification program that will allow subscribers to receive important information about their municipality via text message, email or voice call to phone as well as through the AlertTC smartphone app.
Truro Connect is a communication tool to assist with keeping individuals living and working in the Town of Truro informed of what is happening in our community.
The Town of Truro, the Municipality of the County of Colchester, and the Town of Stewiacke collectively oversee a Regional Emergency Management Organization (REMO) and Emergency Management Plan for the Truro-Colchester region.
REMO is made up of the Regional Emergency Management Advisory Committee, the Regional Protective Services Coordinator, and the Regional Emergency Planning Committee. The Advisory Committee is comprised of the Mayor of each Municipality and one other elected official. The Planning Committee is comprised of representatives from community services, law enforcement, fire, health services, engineering, transportation and communications.
The goal of the Regional Emergency Management Organization for the Truro-Colchester region is to establish arrangements and procedures necessary for the earliest possible coordinated response so that the following can be assured:
The Regional Emergency Management Plan is an "all hazards response plan" or a formalized structure to respond to any emergency situation that may occur within the Town of Truro, Colchester County, or the Town of Stewiacke. Terminology and procedures are based on the Incident Command System (ICS).
